How Space Travel is Destroying the Planet | The Deets – Digital Trends

Space travel has changed a lot in the past few years. In the 1960’s we were racing the Russians to the moon. Now, we have billionaire entrepreneurs racing to send their friends into space. Heck, Elon Musk even sent a freaking Tesla into space. These ventures are all possible because of the resources of the rich, but what about the planet’s resources? We looked into the effects that these launches have on the planet and oh boy, Houston, we do have a problem.

US raises travel warning for Hong Kong over growing civil unrest – CNBC

Fire burns as protesters stand off against riot police during a protest in the Causeway Bay in Hong Kong, China.

The United States raised its travel warning for Hong Kong, urging travelers to exercise increased caution in the Chinese territory due to what it termed civil unrest after months of sometimes violent street protests.

The protests in the Asian financial hub began with opposition to a now-suspended extradition law and have evolved into a direct challenge to the government and calls for full democracy.

“The protests and confrontations have spilled over into neighborhoods other than those where the police have permitted marches or rallies,” said the advisory, which was posted on the U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong and Macau’s website on Wednesday.

“These demonstrations, which can take place with little or no notice, are likely to continue,” it said. The advisory was raised to level two on a four-point scale.

Australia also warned its travelers in an updated advisory on Wednesday.

The protests pose the biggest popular challenge to Chinese President Xi Jinping since he came to power in 2012. Xi is also grappling with a debilitating trade war with the United States and a slowing economy.

Hong Kong is facing its worst crisis since it returned to China from British rule in 1997 because of the protests, the head of China’s Hong Kong and Macau Affairs office said on Wednesday.

More protests are planned in several districts across the city this weekend, starting on Friday, with demonstrators also planning a three-day rally at the city’s international airport.

Hong Kong’s embattled leader Carrie Lam visited Hong Kong districts on Wednesday to speak with residents and inspect a police station that had been the target of recent protests.

She said in a statement after the visit the government would put forward measures to improve people’s livelihoods.

More demonstrations in Hong Kong

Young people have been at the forefront of the protests and are angry about broader problems that include sky-high living costs and what they see as an unfair housing policy skewed towards the rich.

The normally efficient and orderly city has seen its transport network besieged and shut down by demonstrators, while protests across the city have also shut big-brand stores and popular shopping malls.

Hong Kong police have arrested 589 people since the protests began in June, the youngest aged 13.

Several thousand Hong Kong lawyers, dressed in black, marched in silence on Wednesday to call on the government to safeguard the independence of the city’s department of justice.

They fear the justice department’s prosecutions of arrested protesters are taking on an increasingly political slant. Many of those arrested have been charged with rioting, which carries a 10-year jail term.

Protesters have started to use increasingly diverse tactics to evade capture, shifting quickly from place to place and using online platforms such as Telegram to direct hundreds of people.

They also circulated brightly colored pamphlets for tourists ahead of the airport demonstrations to help them understand what was happening. The pamphlets said the protesters would never surrender.

“Dear Travellers, please forgive us for the ‘unexpected Hong Kong’. You’re arrived in a broken, torn-apart city, not the one you have once pictured. Yet the city you imagined is exactly what we are fighting for,” the pamphlets said.

How Deep Space Travel Could Affect The Brain – Eurasia Review

Radiation exposure alters the electrophysiological properties of neurons in the hippocampus. Credit Acharya et al., eNeuro 2019

Radiation exposure alters the electrophysiological properties of neurons in the hippocampus. Credit: Acharya et al., eNeuro 2019

By

Exposure to chronic, low dose radiation — the conditions present in deep space — causes neural and behavioral impairments in mice, researchers report in eNeuro.

These results highlight the pressing need to develop safety measures to protect the brain from radiation during deep space missions as astronauts prepare to travel to Mars.

Radiation is known to disrupt signaling among other processes in the
brain. However, previous experiments used short-term, higher dose-rate
exposures of radiation, which does not accurately reflect the conditions
in space.

To investigate how deep space travel could affect the nervous
system, Charles Limoli and colleagues at the University of California,
Irvine, Stanford University, Colorado State University and the Eastern
Virginia School of Medicine exposed mice to chronic, low dose radiation
for six months. They found that the radiation exposure impaired cellular
signaling in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, resulting in
learning and memory impairments. They also observed increased anxiety
behaviors, indicating that the radiation also impacted the amygdala.

The researchers predict that during a deep space mission
approximately one in five astronauts would experience anxiety-like
behavior and one in three would experience certain levels of memory
impairments. Additionally, the astronauts may struggle with
decision-making.

Travel blogger regrets sharing ‘positive’ posts about trip to Dominican Republic, claims she was actually assaulted: ‘It’s not safe’ – Fox News

A travel blogger with nearly 27,000 followers on Instagram says she regrets not portraying her trip to the Dominican Republic in a more honest light, as she claims she was actually assaulted and nearly kidnapped during her stay.

Cora Smith, who makes up one half of the team behind @The_greatescape.blog along with her husband Jay, recently told Insider that they were initially wary of documenting the negative aspects of their 2018 trip online.

“We were very worried about bashing anyone or anything,” she told Insider. “In all honesty, influencers are too scared to tell the truth and feel they need to show the beautiful side. Most people only want to hear the positive things.”

The couple had spent three months in the Dominican Republic – between March and June 2018 – but Smith says she was accosted twice within the first few weeks.

The first incident, as she told Insider and recounted in a 2018 blog post, occurred while out on a jog along a boardwalk in Santo Domingo. Smith says the driver of a car attempted to force her inside and even stopped in her path before she ran off in the other direction.

TRAVEL BLOGGERS SLAMMED FOR POSTING PHOTOS ON MOVING TRAIN

And later, in Punta Cana, Smith says three men on a motorbike stopped her while she riding a bike before proceeding to grope her.

“The man on the back of the scooter reaches out and grabs my butt,” she recounted. “I was completely shocked and furious. He started to laugh at me in my face.”

Smith says she attempted to kick over the men’s bike, but when she did, “the guy reaches out and grabs my chest” and “full on groped” her.

“They were violating me in every way you can except being raped,” she told Insider, explaining that she kept repeatedly kicking them until she was able to break free and away toward Jay, who was biking up ahead.

Even while they were in the Dominican Republic, Smith says she feared telling local authorities about the incidents after a run-in with police, during which they were more interested in trying to take her husband’s cash.

Smith had even shared part of the story in a blog post shared in 2018, but photos from the couple’s trip focus on the beaches, architecture, landmarks and murals the couple encountered.

“I didn’t tell my story, and I think it’s out of fear,” Smith said.

She added that she wanted to share her experience after hearing the story of Tammy Lawrence-Daley, a Delaware woman who claims she was attacked by man wearing a hotel uniform of the Majestic Elegance resort in Punta Cana and left for dead.

Police in the Dominican Republic are said to be investigating the incident.

“I feel like I can’t sit here and listen to the prime minister and say ‘Our country is safe,’ because it’s not safe,” Smith said.

Cora and Jay Smith are currently in Ibiza, Spain, Insider reports. They have also recently been sharing photos from Indonesia, Thailand and Peru.

Cuban travel crackdown: US bans cruise ships and group tours from visiting island – USA TODAY

Associated Press

Published 12:45 p.m. ET June 4, 2019 | Updated 3:15 p.m. ET June 4, 2019

CLOSE

President Donald Trump and his administration announced it will be imposing restrictions for Americans traveling to Cuba.
Time

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration on Tuesday imposed major new travel restrictions on visits to Cuba by U.S. citizens, banning stops by cruise ships and ending a heavily used form of educational travel as it seeks to further isolate the communist government.

The Treasury Department announced that the U.S. will no longer allow cruises to Cuba or the group educational and cultural trips known as “people-to-people” travel to the island. The sanctions will take effect on Wednesday after they are published in the Federal Register.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the measures are a response to what it calls Cuba’s “destabilizing role” in the Western Hemisphere, including support for the government of President Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela.

“This administration has made a strategic decision to reverse the loosening of sanctions and other restrictions on the Cuban regime,” Mnuchin said. “These actions will help to keep U.S. dollars out of the hands of Cuban military, intelligence, and security services.”

Cruise ships have brought thousands of Americans to Cuba since the U.S. began restoring full diplomatic relations with the communist government in December 2014 and have provided an important economic lifeline to the island.

Along with the cruise ships, the U.S. will also now ban most private planes and boats from stopping in the island.

“Consequently, private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft and vessels generally will be prohibited from going to Cuba,” according to the new rules published by the Commerce Department.

The new restrictions take effect Wednesday, but the government will allow anyone who has already paid for a trip to go ahead with it.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Megan King, a spokesperson for Cruise Lines International Association said the industry group is working through details of the ban.

“CLIA and its cruise lines are currently reviewing and working through the details of the Administration’s Cuba policy announcement made earlier today to assess the scale and timing of its effect on cruise sailings from the U.S. to Cuba,” she said.

USA TODAY contacted several cruise lines that visit Cuba for comment.

The new measures end cruise travel from the U.S. to Cuba, a highly successful new line of business for U.S. cruise lines that also has become the most popular way for American leisure travelers to visit the island. Cuban government figures show that 142,721 Americans arrived on cruise ships between Jan. 1 and April 30, more than the 114,832 who came by plane. The figures exclude Cuban-born Americans visiting family on the island.

Commercial airline flights appear to be unaffected and travel for university groups, academic research, journalism and professional meetings will continue to be allowed.

“It kills the people-to-people category, which is the most common way for the average American to travel to Cuba,” said Collin Laverty, head of Cuba Educational Travel, one of the largest Cuba travel companies in the U.S.

The new restrictions had been previewed by national security adviser John Bolton in an April speech in Miami to veterans of the failed 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion but details of the changed were public until Tuesday.

Nagasaki houses church symbol of the rebirth of Christianity in Japan

The Christian religion has been banned in the eastern country for over 250 years

The Oura Church in Nagasaki became a World Heritage Site in 2018 and is the symbol of the revival of Christianity in Japan. The place is a must-stop for anyone who wants to know the history of “hidden Christians” who declared their faith in that place and put more than 250 years of clandestinity.

Considered to be one of the oldest in Japan, the Oura is one of 12 places of hidden Christians recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Nagasaki and the Amakusa region.

The church was built in 1864 by the French missionary Bernard-Thadée Petitjean shortly after the port of Nagasaki was reopened along with the borders of Japan more than two centuries of isolation afterward.

With the veto that had been imposed on Christianity in the country in 1614 and the presumption that the Japanese Christian community had disappeared after the brutal persecution suffered in the 17th century, the temple turned to the foreigners who lived in the city.

Less than a month after the inauguration, something amazing happened. On March 17, 1865, a group of peasants from Urakami went to church and said that they always pretended to profess local faith and that, in fact, they were Catholics.

This event, dubbed “The Discovery of Hidden Christians,” was immortalized in a mural that today decorates the church garden.

The revelation, led by Elizabethina Yuri Sugimoto, caused Japanese authorities to resume repression against Catholics until international criticism lifted the ban in 1873.

With the reintroduction of Christianity in Japan, some Kakure Kirishitan – descendants of the Catholics who hid in the Shimabara Rebellion in 1637 and 1638 – rejoined the church, even though Christians are still less than 1% of the population today.

Centuries of concealment and isolation, however, have turned religion into a totally different cult. Proof of this is some of the relics exhibited in the Museum and Monument of the Twenty-Six Martyrs, which is next to the church.

When the Japanese became without a priest, tortured for refusing to renounce their faith and murdered, those who resisted created their own authorities and hid their images of devotion.

The museum brings together, for example, several images of Our Lady depicted as Kannon (Maria Kannon), the Buddhist representation of mercy, with which the faithful tried to disguise and avoid being discovered, and the staves that religious leaders should use in ceremonies.

In addition, several crosses, whose meaning was often unknown to these devotees, are being found in ancient villages and it is believed that there may be more than 200 of them scattered throughout the region.

“The people who kept the faith celebrated when the ban on Christianity was withdrawn and now they are again happy with the designation of these spaces as patrimony. This means giving value to what they have stored, “Efe Minako Uchijima, a museum researcher, told EFE.

The halls also prove the persecution of Catholics by the shamans, feudal Japan military who acted in the country between 1603 and 1868.

All of Nagasaki was forced to submit to “Fumi-e,” a practice designed to identify who was and who was not Christian by stepping on an image of Jesus or Our Lady. Many believers have agreed to do this not to be killed, but it is believed that about 5,500 Christians died at that time.

One of the most striking episodes was the crucifixion in February 1597 of 26 martyrs – 9 European and 16 Japanese – on a hill in Nagasaki. On the altar of the Oura Church is a handkerchief that resembles this case.

Father Petitjean’s intention was to build the temple there, but the authorities did not allow it. He then chose the current location and walked the church facing the hill.

Oslo is a place full of energy, with a modern gastronomy, in addition to much fashion and art. Iconic buildings are changing the face of the city, but it still maintains ties with nature. No wonder it was named Green Capital of Europe in 2019 for its dedication to the preservation of natural areas. Walks through the forest dives on the fjords and musical concerts are part of the city’s energy. All of Oslo’s neighborhoods offer something special and are easily accessible on foot, by public transport or by bicycle.

During the winter, it is possible to look for activities such as ice skating and skiing. Oslomarka, the huge forest on the slopes of the hills surrounding the city, offers an immense network of public trails for cross-country skiing. The Oslo Winter Park is the largest ski resort in the city and is just 30 minutes from downtown, with slopes for children, beginners, and experienced skiers. Between May and September, the temperatures are milder, which guarantees a more peaceful journey. To save money, the best month is March, when airfare there is cheaper in Kayak.

Nature and exclusivity in a paradise to be discovered on the Portuguese coast

Until the late twentieth century, the Troia peninsula was occupied by apartment towers that stained gray their kilometers of coast. Neither endless cement towers nor crowded beaches. The Troia peninsula, about 50 kilometers south of Lisbon, is committed to sustainable tourism, nature and exclusivity to become a small paradise that begins to attract international attention. Located in a privileged place, in the Sado Estuary Reserve, until the end of the 20th century the oasis of nature of this peninsula was occupied by tall towers of apartments that stained gray their miles of coast.

But in 1997, the largest Portuguese business group, Sonae, decided to end the tourist model of “popular” capitalism in Troia and to focus on a more sustainable vision that exploited the natural charm of the location. Part of the ugly cement towers were demolished in 2005, giving rise to a new chapter in the history of Troia, where Sonae invested 400 million euros to obtain 65% of the peninsula. Following in the footsteps of Sonae, the Portuguese hotel group Pestana and the Rosp group of Sandra Ortega, the daughter of the Spanish businessman Amancio Ortega, also invested in Troia and at the end of 2015 bought part of its property for 50 million euros from Sonae.

The Sonae project, which is part of the Troia Resort, has around 15,300 beds, including the portion now owned by Rosp, of which some 8,300 are already built. “Being optimistic, in five years time we will probably see a large part built. Between five and ten years I believe it is a reasonable period, if economic conditions continue, to end the project, “the director general of Tróia Resort, João Madeira told EFE. The complex, which opened in 2008, includes hotels, apartments, lodges and building plots, properties that started to go on sale at the end of last year and of which more than 400 units had already been sold in June.

Madeira explains that 65% was sold to Portuguese and the rest to foreigners of 29 nationalities, among which the Spanish stand out as the main European market. Clients are divided into similar parts among those who buy apartments for their own use, those who rent them and those who make mixed use. “The Spaniards that we have normally use their home as a second residence, do not rent it,” according to Madeira, who believes that the destination “is not yet known at all by the Spaniards,” although it has gained recognition in that market in the last year. Foreign clients who fill Troia hotels and buy their apartments do not stop growing – when they opened they represented only 15% of the total, but already reach 40% – and that is why Sonae is concentrating its efforts in international markets, such as the French or the Scandinavian.

The qualities of Troia thus begin to be known beyond the Portuguese borders, where not only the 15 kilometers of uncultivated beaches of the peninsula but also its natural surroundings are promoted in a reserve and next to the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park. In fact, the density of construction throughout the tourist development area is very low, only 6% of the more than 1,000 hectares of the peninsula. The proximity to Lisbon, with its airport and its cultural offer, and tourist attractions that are less than an hour and a half by car, such as Comporta, the wine growing of Setúbal or even the city of Évora, are other spells who seek to attract more tourists to Troia.

To combat seasonality, Sonae also bets on sports facilities and has just inaugurated the José Mourinho Sports Center, with which it hopes to attract football teams in the offseason, a center that is sponsored by the famous Portuguese coach, who also bought a property in Troia. “It’s a very important element. It serves to attract international clients and also to work seasonality, one of the themes that still affects Troia and any destination in which the main attraction is the sun and the sea, “said Madeira. The Pestana group completes the tourist offer of the peninsula with its own project, the Pestana Troia Eco-Resort & Residences, with close to 955 beds provided and more than 50% of its space dedicated to the nature reserve. Although not many of Sandra Ortega’s plans in Troy are known, it is known that she has in mind a luxury complex that maintains the low density of construction followed by Sonae and Pestana.
